With Day of the Dead and Halloween just around the corner, we are showcasing this stunning Candy / Sugar Skull range which has been inspired by the Mexican festival Dia de Los Muertos (Day of the Dead). Although festivals honouring the memory of departed loved ones are common throughout the world, it is in Mexico, where Christian beliefs have been infused with Aztec traditions, that this practice has become such a vivid and important part of local culture.
The festival is traditionally celebrated with offerings of some of the departed’s favourite food and drink. Marigolds are scattered, and both the graves of the dead and the homes of the living are decorated with skulls created from sugar and decorated with intricate floral patterns. These sugar skulls (or candy skulls as they are also known) are the most memorable and potent symbol of the festival.
In recent years, designers from around the world have begun to use sugar skull imagery in fashion and in
body art, and now, as the appeal becomes more widespread.
